Here at Driveshafts Perth, we are proud to use Dana Spicer parts – a highly regarded manufacturer in the industry, producing high quality and standardised products. Today we share with you a video tutorial showing a driveshaft repair by the book, operated by Dana Spicer’s technicians.

Here is how it should be done:

Long story short, there are five steps a professional should follow if they are replacing a driveshaft:

Support the car or vehicle on ramps for easy access to the bottom of the car, and make sure the car is in neutral.

Mark the end of the drive shaft at the yoke so that the new drive shaft goes in in the same position as the old one when it came out.

Remove all four bolts from the rear yoke.

Disconnect carefully the driveshaft from the transmission.

Install the new drive shaft by following the above steps in reverse order.

A broken, malfunctioning or poorly maintained driveshaft can be an expensive headache for truck drivers. But many only realise that as they open their wallets to repair it.

How about taking a few simple measures to look after your driveshaft, helping it to maintain performance and preventing future problems?

1. Perform a Regular Visual Inspection

Many vehicle owners fail to do the simplest form of maintenance: a simple visual inspection of your driveshaft can tell you if problems are around the corner. If one part becomes damaged or worn it can create problems for other parts. Check whether everything moves smoothly and if there are any signs of metal wear, which should be quite obvious.

2. Clean and Lubricate It

Always keep your driveshaft free of dirt and grime and ensure it is well-lubricated. As with all moving parts, this will extend its life. This should be done as frequently as you change the oil in your vehicle – and make sure you use the recommended high temperature grease on all the critical parts. Avoid use of high-pressure cleaners as this can force dirt into sealed parts.

3. Use a Specialised Service Centre for Re-Balancing

A driveshaft that is not balanced properly will cause growing problems. When you inspect your vehicle, if you notice a gouge, dent, or hole in the round tube part it is a problem; likewise if you feel a vibration when you drive your vehicle it is a sign of imbalance. This will need to be corrected professionally at a reputable and specialised driveshaft balancing service centre, before it creates any bigger problems for your axle or transmission system.

LG Engineering services driveshafts for vehicles all over WA. Our specialty is large industrial vehicles and mining equipment and, when replacing parts, we use only the best manufacturers like Dana Spicer.

Contact us today, or call 08 9351 9373 for any queries about driveshaft repair or servicing.

In vehicles the tailshaft transfers power from the gearbox to the differential, as opposed to a driveshaft which transfers power from the differential to the wheels or other mechanical parts, causing rotation.

Tailshafts in marine vehicles refer to the rear section of a ship’s propeller shaft. It is usually a metallic rod which holds the propeller and is connected to the power engine.

In any vehicle they can endure a large amount of stress and torsion (twisting). While they are designed to carry these forces, over time they can become damaged or out of balance, affecting the performance of the vehicle.

Simple wear and tear can cause tiny deviations from “true”, like a quarter of a thousandth, but this is enough to cause an unbalancing effect and potentially serious (and expensive) issues.

Maintaining and Repairing Tailshafts

In standard road vehicles, a slightly out of balance tailshaft can cause problems of safety and performance, but is generally manageable.

In heavy industrial vehicles, trucks, mining vehicles, marine vehicles and high speed racing cars, problems are multiplied and magnified and require highly specialised engineering and balancing equipment to repair them.

Such problems may also point to other deep-lying issues with the mechanics of the vehicle, like universal joint failure.

It takes properly-licensed and experienced specialists to repair such problems with high performance vehicles. A licensed specialist will be able to carry out repairs on site and return your vehicle to tip-top condition, re-balancing or rebuilding the tailshaft to ensure maximum safety and reliability into the future.

LG Engineering in Perth uses only the highest quality parts and we offer a priority service for tailshaft repairs, ensuring your vehicle is back working at high performance in no time.

The Government of South Australia’s Dept. of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure issued a warning recently that’s equally pertinent to Perth. Officials are concerned that leisure-boat owners more used to outboard motors – where fuel spills are highly visible – may become casual when using unfamiliar under-floor fuel tanks.

The Department’s Director Brian Hemming was certainly not mincing his words when he said that “it’s crucial to play it safe – and that includes ensuring your boat is safe too. I urge all boat owners to take extra care when maintaining and operating their boats, especially when refueling with petrol”.

This is particularly relevant for leisure boat enthusiasts more used to diesel motors. That’s because petrol has a lower flash-point and its vapors are far more flammable. Even the smallest spark or electric short can set it off. The South Australia regulator has issued the following advice for when refueling:

Turn the engine off and remove the key

Put out cigarettes, turn off pilot lights and disconnect the battery

Have a non-metallic container handy to catch any spills

If moored at a jetty ask all passengers to disembark

Never overfill the tank and clear up spills immediately

Run the motor for several minutes after all fuel smells have cleared

Only allow passengers to return when you are completely confident

The only thing that we can add is always have a reliable fire extinguisher handy. This information is provided by Driveshafts Perth as a public service to the Perth leisure boat fraternity.

We’re pleased to hear that Belarusian manufacturing giant BelAZ has teamed with Australasian Pacific Machinery, and will soon be exporting its first monster mining trucks down under. After all, if one in three of all mining trucks around the world are BelAZ ones, the only question is: why did it take so long?

The larger 360 tonne vehicle benefits from a 20V 4000 series engine churning out 2800 kW of power. Its 240 tonne “baby brother” is not that far behind with a 16V 4000 powerhouse providing 1864kW of output. According to BelAZ General Director Petr Parkhomchyk, all trucks will be built to Australian mining standards, being based on Rio Tinto specifications to make doubly sure.

This will facilitate processing any Australian order within five months, including delivery and commissioning on site. Hunter Valley-based Sharps Heavy Equipment will be responsible for post-delivery service and guarantee repairs. Beyond that point Driveshafts Perth are confident of our ability to meet OE standards with genuine Dana Spicer parts.

It is a bold move to introduce articulated frame trucks into the Australian market when Chinese economic developments have pushed down demand for Australian minerals. That said, it’s a good example of the positive signs Australia needs to kick-start its own economy.

BelAZ (Belarusian Autoworks) is a powerful player in international heavy duty mining and other truck sales. Other products in its catalogue include construction and road building equipment, underground vehicles, railway freight cars and special purpose vehicles for metallurgical works.

Drive shaft problems, like most vehicle problems, happen from time to time. It’s not the sort of problem that will happen overnight, but over time your parts will wear, and then problems might start arising.

Just as a bit of advice, following are a few tips and things to listen for that might indicate you have drive shaft problems.

Trouble Turning

Drive shaft problems can cause your vehicle not to turn properly. If you notice a sluggish reaction from your vehicle when you’re performing a U turn, trying to manoeuvre it to park or turn a hard corner, you might have some drive shaft problems.

Sounds

You vehicle might be making some strange sounds if you have drive shaft problems. It’s usually a low squeaking sound that gets faster or slower as you accelerate or decelerate, and sometimes disappears altogether at high speed. The problem that’s occuring on here is likely to be a damaged universal joint, which is connected to the driveshaft.

Universal Joint Movement

A universal joint that moves too much (or not at all) can also indicate a drive shaft problem. For someone who’s not so mechanically savvy, finding this one out could be a bit of an effort; in which case, if you do suspect you have drive shaft problems, take it to someone like LG Engineering.

Vibration

Drive shaft problems can cause your vehicle to vibrate or shake. The vibrating might affect the whole car or it might only affect certain parts, particularly the floor. It is most likely to happen once you’re at speed or completely stationary. While vibrating could be tyre issues, those vibrations usually happen when accelerating or decelerating; the opposite to driveshafts.

If any of these symptoms are happening with your vehicle, it might be worth getting it checked out for drive shaft problems. At LG Engineering, we’d be happy to help you out, so give us a call!

Drive shaft replacement is not something everyone can do. So, being the specialist skill that it is, come and see us at LG Engineering.

If you’d like to know what we do, here’s a quick overview of the steps taken in a drive shaft replacement in a car.

First step is to, for the time being, remove all of the exhaust system, except the muffler, from where it is attached to the rest of the car.

Next is a fairly obvious step, and that is removing the old driveshaft. We do this carefully so nothing in the transmission is damaged. The old part will be unbolted, and then lowered out keeping a downward angle at the rear.

The next step is installing the replacement part. This involves sliding the new transmission carefully back into the transmission, making sure everything is aligned, and then bolting it in. Once all the bolts are tightened and it’s all securely in place, the drive shaft replacement is over – we just have to put the car back together.

One of the final steps then is putting the exhaust system back in. When your car is all back together, and fitted with its new driveshaft, it’s time to take it for a test run. Then once we’re happy, it’s back to you!

So in a nutshell, that’s how a drive shaft replacement happens on a car. At LG Engineering we can also do drive shaft replacement on trucks, mining trucks and equipment, marine vehicles, industrial equipment, performance vehicles and four wheel drives. Contact us today!

The power take-off shaft or PTO shaft, is used to transmit power, most commonly from a tractor, to an implement. With PTO shafts, two speeds are traditionally used; 540 rpm and 1000 rpm.

Most often, on a tractor or truck there is a splined driveshaft that is designed so that the PTO shaft can be easily connected and disconnected. However, there are some industrial and marine engines that have semi-permanently mounted PTO shafts.

PTO Shaft Dangers

Depending on the location of the PTO shaft and the machine it is mounted on, PTO shafts can present dangers to those who operating the machinery. PTO entanglements occur most often on farming equipment. Any machine that has an unshielded PTO shaft should be considered dangerous.

Truck PTOs

Truck transmissions may have more than one position in which a PTO can be mounted. Finding an expert PTO supplier and professionals that know how to mount them is critical for correct installation. In many of these cases users will need to engage or disengage the physical interface of the transmission with the proper PTO. A professional PTO supplier will understand how to collect the required details for any setup that will include information about the make, model, and the mounting requirements.

Safety tips and PTO shafts

Always make sure the PTO shaft is shielded.

Maintain the shield so that it can continue to work properly.

Keep a safe working distance from the PTO shaft when in use.

Be aware of your surroundings.

When in doubt, stop the machinery.

When stopping the machinery for whatever reason, remove the PTO from the gear, turn off the engine, and set a brake.
